The Taste of Black Austin explores the history of our community’s economic development through the food of specific eras. This year the creations of five of Austin’s favorite Black chefs and a curated photo exhibition showcase how Victor H. Green’s “Negro Motorist Green-Book” enabled safer black car travel through a segregated country.
This resource, published for 30 years, listed locations where black travelers could eat and sleep without degradation or fear. Taste of Black Austin guests will sample cuisine reminiscent of meals served to African American travelers from churches, homes, and black-owned cafes throughout the Jim Crow south. The menu features bite-size versions of dishes found in archived recipe books and menus.
