Austin Public Library Welcomes Hannah Terrell as Director of Libraries

Black Business Journal 4 months ago

Austin Public Library (APL) is pleased to announce the appointment of Hannah Terrell as its new Director of Libraries, effective December 15, 2025.

The Director of Libraries leads the Austin Public Library system, overseeing operations, programs, facilities, and staff in service to one of the nation’s fastest-growing and most diverse cities. The position became vacant when former Director Roosevelt Weeks accepted the role of Director of Fort Bend County Libraries. Since that time, Terrell has served as Interim Director, guiding the department through a period of transition and continued growth.

Following a nationwide search and comprehensive interview process, the City of Austin selected Terrell to assume the role on a permanent basis.

“It has been an honor to lead the Austin Public Library as Interim Director, and I am deeply grateful to now be stepping into the permanent role of Director,” said Terrell. “I look forward to continuing this work alongside the brilliant staff at APL as we move confidently together into APL’s second century of service.”

The appointment comes as Austin Public Library prepares to celebrate a major milestone—its centennial in 2026—marking 100 years of public service, learning, and community connection.

About Hannah Terrell

Hannah Terrell is a seasoned public library executive with more than 20 years of experience leading library services in both large urban systems and rural communities. Since September 2024, she has served as Interim Director of Libraries for the Austin Public Library Department, overseeing a team of more than 460 employees and advancing the library’s strategic vision to meet Austin’s rapid growth and evolving community needs.

Terrell’s leadership is grounded in equity, collaboration, and staff development. She is widely recognized for empowering teams, fostering inclusive workplace cultures, and championing programming that expands access and opportunity for all residents.

Prior to joining APL, Terrell held key leadership roles with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library and Union County Public Library in Charlotte, North Carolina. In these roles, she led civic engagement initiatives and launched innovative service pilots designed to reach underserved communities and strengthen public trust in library services.

Terrell holds a Master of Library Science degree from North Carolina Central University and a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration from the University of Detroit Mercy.

With Terrell’s permanent appointment, Austin Public Library continues its commitment to visionary leadership, inclusive service, and community-centered innovation as it enters its next century of impact.
