Local Austin Churches Band together to Use the Power of Food to Help Heal & Strengthen Communities

william 6 years ago

Help lift communities in need through volunteering to fill food boxes for the Central Texas Food Bank.

Greater Mt. Zion Church and other local churches and organizations  ( Central Texas Food Bank, Austin Disaster Relief Network, Celebration Church, Austin Christian Fellowship, Shoreline Church and Life Austin Church ) are partnering together to use the power of food to heal and strengthen our communities in need in times of crisis and beyond. Confronted by the immediate and long term ramifications of our current reality, these faith-based organizations have activated a solutions-oriented movement to support and inspire people.

Volunteers are needed to help serve our neighbors by assembling food boxes for the Central Texas Food Bank (CTFB) for the next 8 weeks…at least!

Under the ‘Shelter in Place order‘, our service is considered an essential service. We will be hyper vigilant about our health and safety while serving and we will follow ALL sanitation, hygiene and social distancing guidelines as outlined by the City of Austin and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you’re healthy and not in a high-risk group, please consider helping out. Information on signup is below.

We are transforming the GMZ lobby into a warehouse operation similar to what is in place at CTFB. Our role in this partnership is to assemble food boxes according to the guidelines established by CTFB in excellence and as quickly as possible. It is anticipated that we will receive 3-4 truckloads of food per week from CTFB, all dependent upon how quickly we can assemble food boxes and return them to CTFB.

We will use the SERVE App to sign up for this service project. This app will be used for outreach only. Download instructions from your app store are below.

As you review the serving opportunities for Greater Mt. Zion please scroll down to review all shift options before signing up. Please note a few things before signing up.

  1. You will be standing for long periods of time.
  2. This is a fast-paced environment.
  3. We will be hyper vigilant about screening each volunteer. But please do not sign up if you have knowingly been exposed to the Coronavirus, have been asked to self-quarantine or you are sick. Children under 15 will not be allowed to serve nor allowed to enter the building. Childcare will not be provided.

We can’t wait to serve with you.

SERVE App Download Instructions:

  • From your App Store or Play Store, search for “Serve Day”.  You will see a red box with white letters “SERVE”. Download this app to your device.
  • Once you open the app, you will see a couple of pictures and then a couple of white screens with a red bar at the bottom containing a “>”.  Click the “>” twice.
