If an effort to continue to add to the narrative of boys and men of color, the Austin Justice Coalition is happy to announce our first-ever Black Boy Joy, a showcase, featuring local talent from across Central Texas.
“If you listen to what the mainstream media says about black boys and men you would think we are THUGS who are hyper masculine, so I want this event to showcase that we too have softer, vulnerable sides to us that can be expressed through dance, and song etc…” – Chas Moore, Executive Director
Through the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color Catalyst Fund at Community Partners, a national fund established to build, develop, and invest in local coalitions across the nation, Austin, Texas joined the movement through the Austin Justice Coalition to advance justice and build opportunity for boys and men of color, their families, and communities.
As the Austin Justice Coalition continues to focus on policy on the local and state level, we know that it is integral to our culture to provide a creative outlet young boys and men of color. There are not enough opportunities to allow men of color to perform in unique ways.
The winners of our Art & Essay contest for young men of color grades 3 – 12 will be announced at this event as well. More information about the Art and Essay contest can be found: here .

Boys and Men of Color Initiative
This summer, the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color awarded $20,000 each to 15 organizations, including the Austin Justice Coalition (AJC).
Through the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color Catalyst Fund at Community Partners, a national fund established to build, develop, and invest in local coalitions across the nation, Austin, Texas joined the movement through the Austin Justice Coalition to advance justice and build opportunity for boys and men of color, their families, and communities.
Through the Catalyst Fund, the Alliance is investing in continued policy and systems changes that engage and invest in grassroots leaders working at the intersection of race and gender justice, while advocating for state policy that improves outcomes for boys and young men of color. We are thankful that Austin Justice Coalition can join in the movement and will be using this investment over the next 9 months.
As the Austin Justice Coalition continues to focus on policy on the local and state level, we know that it is integral to our culture to provide a creative outlet young boys and men of color.
2019 ART & ESSAY CONTEST

This contest is open to in Travis, Williamson Hays Counties in grades 3– 12.
There are three group:
• Elementary (grades 3 – 5)
• Middle (grades 6– 8)
• High (grades 9 – 12)
Students must complete an official entry form to attach to their essays or art pieces. The due date for all essays and art pieces April 1st. You can find the entry form: here
Winners from each division will receive a $75 award and an award-winning book of their choice.
We are also looking for community members to participate as volunteer judges in order to select the winners of our contests. If you are interested in participating as a volunteer judge, fill out this volunteer inquiry form.
