Beloved Austinite, Richard Overton, turned 112 this week.

Black Business Journal 8 years ago

Beloved Austinite, Richard Overton, turned 112 this week.

He’s long been the oldest living veteran in the country. He began his military career in with the Army on Sept. 3, 1940, at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.

At age 112, Richard Arvin Overton, born May 11, 1906, is the oldest verified World War II veteran and believed to be the third-oldest man in the world.

The Department of Veterans Affairs would pay for him to move into an assisted-living facility, but he would prefer to stay in his home in Austin, Texas, for the remainder of his life.

His family set up a GoFundMe to help pay for the $15,000 a month in-home care bills.

Mr. Overton often gets asked the same question: “what is your secret to living so long?”

Is it the cigars?  The whiskey?

And he always answers it the same way: you’ll have to “ask God” about that.
